Oola David
Age 15
Primary 5 (day)
Oola David lives with his grandmother and great grandmother
and five other children in Gangdyang, a village near Kitgum in northern Uganda.
He lives with his grandmother because he was being beaten
by his alcoholic father and because of the war. His grandfather is dead. His family
lives 45 miles away. He and his grandmother moved closer to Kitgum for medical attention
for his grandmother.
His grandmother supports the household by making charcoal
and now also works making beads. Oola David is an above average student who likes
English and social studies. He wants to be a pilot some day. He enjoys playing soccer
with his friends. He helps his family by fetching water, sweeping and washing dishes.
On weekends, he helps dig on land they rent to grow crops.
His grandmother also cares for another girl who is blind in one eye, and whose father
was killed in a cattle raid and whose mother is HIV positive. Her second born son
was beaten and killed by the rebels. For a time they were sleeping in bush at night
to avoid capture until they
came to Kitgum.
The family does not have enough food (they are not with
the World Food Program) and not enough clothing.
Your sponsorship of Oola David will help assure that he can continue in school and will help alleviate stress for his grandmother who
is finding it difficult to provide food and clothing for her household.
