Ojok Joseph
Age 15
Seconday 3 (day)
Ojok has been at home two years awaiting a chance to
continue on with his secondary education in S-3.
He lives with his parents, 7 siblings and two of his
brother’s children in a rented room in the Danida area of Jinja.
His brother was killed in the war.
The family has many problems. Her husband was doing occasional
contract work for a steel fabricating company that has had no work for him since
January 2007.
Therefore, he has gone back to Pader district in northern Uganda to see if he can survive there where the family has land (but almost all
homes have been destroyed there by the war). In the meantime, they have not paid
the rented room rent for five months and the landlord says to get out.
None of the children are now in school although 3 should
be in primary school and 3 should be in secondary school.
One of the children has a physical handicap of missing
half her fingers and toes. The family is renting a plot of land 4 miles away on
which it grows some food for the family.
Ojok’s mother digs there and grows maize, and also makes
bead necklaces.
When he was in school, Ojok was an above average student.
He was generally 5 out of 56. He likes science and
would like to become a doctor.
His hope is to go to the boarding section of a secondary
school six miles away that has a laboratory for its science classes and has a higher
standard.
