Garard Abonga lives with his grandmother and 1 other grandchild in the village of Gangdyang near Kitgum. His grandfather was killed by rebels, and the grandchildren’s mothers both died of AIDS.
One of the grandmother’s son-in-laws was also killed by the rebels. Garard’s grandmother earns a small income by buying grains and fruits in Kitgum and then reselling them in her village.
She also brews a local alcohol beverage a couple of times each month. Garard attends a nursery school that is a 25 minute walk from his home. He is very social.
He is very fast in helping whether it is fetching water or getting things from the market.
