Asayo Martha
Age 13
Secondary 1
Asayo is the youngest of six children (3 siblings and
2 orphaned cousins) who all live with her mother in a single rented room in the
Walakuba section of Jinja.
Her family originally moved here from Lokuma in the Kitgum
district of northern Uganda 20 years ago because of the war. Her mother’s brother
and sister are dead and her mother’s husband was killed in the war.
Her mother was captured by the rebels but managed to
escape. Her mother earns a little income from a small distillery operation and by
occasionally helping business owners from India. Her mother also grows food such
as maize, potatoes and cassava on a small plot. This helps feed the family.
Asayo helps her mother grow the vegetables during her
school breaks. She is a boarding student at a vocational/secondary school about five miles from Jinja. She is an average student whose favorite subjects are English,
social studies, drama, music and French. She also likes the computer. She is a Girl
Guide and is also a member of a wildlife society. She likes to play hockey and net
ball. She wants to eventually become a nurse.
Your sponsorship will help Asayo continue her schooling
so that she can achieve her dream of becoming a nurse.
