Aloyo Gladys

Age 14
Primary 6 (Day)

Aloyo Gladys lives with her mother, siblings and a child of her sister’s who died in childbirth. Her father died in the war.

The family lives in a rented hut in Gangdyang village near Kitgum. Earlier in the war, her family lived in a village 32 miles east of Kitgum. Her mother was abducted by the rebels and forced to do looting and carry 75 kilo bags of sorghum to Sudan.

They released her mother after three weeks when she began to have convulsions. She then moved the family near Kitgum to be safer. Her mother earns a small income by reseling grains and fruits from Kitgum in her village. She also makes beads. Aloyo Gladys likes English and science.

She plays netball for her school’s team, and wants to be an electrical engineer one day. She helps her family by fetching water, washing clothes and cooking. The family struggles to meet its daily obligations and keep the children in school.

Her mother wishes there was a larger market for the beads. She would like to be able to earn more money so that one day she could buy her own land and home.
